Prepare For The Cookie

The Dutch Data Protection Authority notes that citizens are more aware of online privacy. Legislation is gradually improving the protection of your data worldwide, in this article you can read why this is necessary. I also prove with examples from Husqvarna and Gazelle that cookies are actually not necessary and can go into the trash.

 

Consumers notice more often that online privacy is not self-evident. Politics follows with the Digital Services Act, which should increase online security. Among other things, by tracking without the visitor’s consent and dark patterns for cookie consent. The law is ready to be approved in the European Union.

‘I have nothing to hide’, you may think. ‘My data can have ‘them’.

But are you sure? Do you also let strangers snoop through your personal items at home? I can guess the answer: no, of course not. But why would you agree with that when it comes to your digital privacy?

A look back

Around 2018, the scandal surrounding  One key to that data was a seemingly harmless app that tested your personality. Ultimately, data from some 87 million people could be used to influence the American elections.

In 2019, the FaceApp was popular, with which you put an age filter over your photo. It turned out to be a Russian app in which European privacy legislation may not apply. Your photo, IP address and smartphone data were stored via the app. Your face was therefore in a database. You are not sure if anything is being used for identity theft.

 

In the same year, the American app builder Tiny Lab was reprimanded. The company makes apps for children and has been General Manager Email List accused of tracking users (including underage users) and selling their data, such as device location.

What do you give permission for?

It is often unclear what you as a consumer give permission for. Who checks the cookie notification of a website? How many people view all terms and conditions after downloading an app? Almost nobody.

That is where the risk of the current model lies. What happens to your data is diffuse. You usually have no idea. In the case of a cookie notification from (for example) a news site, take a look at ‘third parties’ or ‘partners’ with whom your data is shared. Such as your click behavior and precise location. You will be amazed with how many games that is
